Gold IRA Rollover Guide
A practical overview of moving eligible retirement assets into an IRA that can hold qualifying precious metals.
A Gold IRA rollover is a funding process, not an investment recommendation. The first question is whether the existing retirement plan or IRA can be moved in the manner you intend.
Three common mechanics
- Direct rollover: an employer plan pays an eligible distribution directly to another plan or IRA.
- Trustee-to-trustee transfer: one IRA institution sends assets directly to another IRA institution.
- 60-day rollover: a distribution is paid to you and must generally be redeposited within 60 days to qualify as a rollover.
IRS guidance says an eligible employer-plan distribution paid to you is generally subject to 20% mandatory withholding, while a direct rollover is not.
