Does Gold Belong in a Retirement Portfolio?
A decision framework for thinking about gold exposure without pretending there is one correct allocation for everyone.
Gold can behave differently from stocks, bonds and cash, but “different” is not the same as “always better.” The right question is what role, if any, the exposure is intended to play in the context of the whole portfolio.
Questions to answer first
- What problem are you trying to solve?
- How much volatility can you tolerate?
- What liquidity do you need?
- How would fees affect the expected benefit?
- Are you choosing physical metal, an ETF, mining equities, or another form of exposure?
Bullion Compass does not prescribe a gold allocation. That is an individualized portfolio decision.
