Gold IRA Pros and Cons
A balanced look at physical precious metals inside a retirement account, including costs, complexity, liquidity and diversification considerations.
Gold IRAs can appeal to investors who specifically want physical precious metals inside a tax-advantaged retirement structure. That same structure introduces tradeoffs that should be evaluated before moving retirement assets.
Potential advantages
- Physical precious-metals exposure inside an IRA structure
- A distinct asset class for investors intentionally seeking diversification
- Direct ownership through the IRA rather than exposure only through a mining company or fund
Potential disadvantages
- Custodian, administration and storage fees
- Dealer spreads and transaction costs
- Price volatility and no guaranteed return
- More operational complexity than buying a conventional exchange-traded asset
- Potential liquidity friction when selling physical metal
Investor.gov specifically warns that self-directed IRAs can involve fraud risk, high fees, limited liquidity and volatile performance. A precious-metals IRA should not be evaluated as automatically “safe” merely because the assets are tangible.
