Gold IRA Custodian vs Dealer: What's the Difference?

Separate the account administrator from the company selling the precious metals.

The custodian administers the IRA. The dealer sells precious metals. A depository may separately store them. These roles can work together operationally without becoming the same legal or economic function.

Why the distinction protects your due diligence

A dealer can recommend a custodian, but that does not mean the custodian endorses the dealer's investment claims. Investor.gov warns investors not to assume a self-directed IRA custodian has vetted an alternative asset.
