Gold IRA Eligible Metals

What makes a precious metal potentially eligible for IRA ownership, and why eligibility is more than a marketing label.

Not every gold or silver product a dealer sells belongs in an IRA. The Internal Revenue Code generally treats metals as collectibles but provides exceptions for certain coins and bullion meeting statutory requirements.

Why product-level verification matters

A product can look investment-grade while still failing to qualify for a particular IRA transaction. Before purchase, verify the exact coin or bar with the custodian rather than relying only on a generic “IRA-approved” page.

Custody still matters

Qualifying bullion generally must be held by the IRA trustee or custodian. Product eligibility and custody requirements work together.
